  • Alienware just unveiled a game-changing, innovative gaming laptop for gamers at CES 2019, making it a very appealing option to replace gaming desktops
  • The Area 51m, perhaps a tribute to the company’s first laptop, and it promises upgrade-ability which was usually limited when it comes to laptops
  • The price of the Alienware Area 51m starts at $2,549, and will be available starting January 29th.

This year’s CES, just like every other year, are filled with new laptops, and most of them are now focused on gaming – and Alienware isn’t a stranger on that league.

At CES 2019, Alienware has just showed us what could be the future of gaming laptops – upgrade-able components. It’s new Area 51m gaming laptop is perhaps one of the bonkers (or wild) laptops unveiled at this year’s biggest tech show on Earth.

We couldn’t help but get excited, but first, let us tell you about what’s inside.

The monstrous 17-inch gaming beast sports a full-sized desktop CPU (supporting up to Intel’s top-of-the-line Core i9-9900K), a proprietary GPU slot (Dell Graphics Form Factor [DGFF]) slot for NVIDIA’s RTX 20-series cards, as well as replaceable RAM and storage. Although it promises upgrade-ability with a swappable GPU and CPU, there could be a potential downside with finding the component to swap out the GPU since it comes in on a proprietary card.

A variety of options for storage could be employed as well, such as stuffing in up to two 1TB m.2 SSDs, and up to a 1TB 2.5-inch hybrid drive.

There’s also a 17.3-inch display, which comes in a variety of options too: 60Hz; G-SYNC at 60Hz; 144Hz with Tobii eye tracking; 144Hz with G-SYNC; or 144Hz with both of those features. Unfortunately, yes, you’re stuck with 1080p for now. Brightness could reach up to 300 nits.

In terms of connectivity, the Area 51m won’t disappoint. There’s three USB 3.1 ports, a USB-C Thunderbolt 3, a 2.5Gbps Ethernet port, Mini DisplayPort and HDMI. There’s also a port for Alienware’s Graphics Amplifier which lets you plug-in an external GPU to further increase its power.

The Area 51m comes with two power adapters – you’ll just need one to work on casually, but both are required to supplement enough power for the GPU (when gaming).

Although you can see the sleekness in design, the gaming laptop isn’t light, as every powerful laptops like these tend to be heavy. At around 8.5 pounds, this gaming laptop could still be carried around with a backpack.
